Solid Advice About Choosing a Lawyer

lawyer-1-300x234.jpgIf you are currently in the market for an attorney and you don't already have a relationship with good counsel in the area of expertise you seek, choosing a lawyer may seem daunting. Take heart, there are a few simple rules that can guide you to a good decision.

Ask for references. If you know someone who has faced a similar legal situation, ask which attorney handled his or her case and whether your friend or associate was pleased with the results. Everyone who has ever used a lawyer has an option, good or bad, about the services they received. No matter how your reference ranks the attorney he or she used, you will have more information in your arsenal to help you make a good decision. The more folks you can ask about their experiences with specific attorney in your area, the better off you'll be. If you're unsure who to ask for a reference, ask professionals in your area who are more likely to know local attorneys. Doctors, religious leaders, and business owners can often offer up the names of contacts they have in your community.

Vet the attorney online who you are considering. Go ahead, check his or her record. Where and when did he or she attend law school? Have there been complaints lodged against this lawyer with the Bar Association or Board of Professional Responsibility? Can you find any newspaper articles or blog posts that speak to this attorney's track record?

Go for a consultation. Especially if more than one attorney may be recommended by those you've asked for references, meetings with those attorneys are in order. Be aware that not every attorney offers a free consultation, but many do. (Pro tip: If you are asked to pay a consultation fee, ask whether it can be credited towards your bill if you hire the attorney with whom you're meeting.) Be prepared for your meeting with a list of questions including whether the attorney has experience with cases similar to yours and what the outcomes of those cases have been. You may also want to ask whether your case will be expected to go to court, how your attorney handles mediation and settlement, and how you will be billed for legal services, in addition to more specific questions about your individual situation. If you have found any information about the attorney you question during your internet search, now is the time to ask.

No matter your situation, finding the right lawyer to handle your case can make a substantial difference in the outcome. Do your homework, ask for references from people you trust, and meet with the attorney in advance to make certain he or she can meet the needs of your particular case.
