During the Holidays, Slips and Falls Don't Just Happen on Ice

After making your list of gifts to purchase and checking it twice, you may set out to visit a variety of shopping centers and retail outlets in Tennessee. While you might be fully prepared to make your way through crowded parking lots and busy stores, being aware of the potential hazards that may await you can be challenging.

As you enter each store, you may expect to have an uneventful shopping experience free of safety hazards. With the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping all around, it may prove difficult for store owners and managers to keep floors and stairways dry and free of clutter, but it may also be essential to your safety as a consumer.

Possible safety concerns for shoppers

While business owners have a duty to take every precaution necessary to limit the hazards shoppers face, accidents involving slips, trips and falls remain a major concern. Some of the possible risks you may encounter while shopping for the holidays may include:

  • Slick floors: Wet or slippery surfaces can pose a significant threat to your safety, and if stores fail to place signs to notify you of such hazards, the risk you may suffer a fall is ever present.
  • Poorly maintained areas: Uneven floors and poorly maintained areas can also pose a significant threat to your health, and any holes or cracks present in the surrounding surfaces can prove dangerous.
  • Dim lighting: Areas with poor lighting can make it difficult to spot potential hazards to your health, and using caution when traversing these areas is likely in your best interests.
  • Heavy traffic: During the holiday shopping season, customers may bring a portion of the weather with them upon entering each store. During times of rainy or snowy weather, floors can quickly become hazardous.

During the holidays, business owners also have a duty to keep emergency exits clear and ensure signs remain illuminated and doors unlocked. Should the need to evacuate arise, anything that blocks your way forth could pose a threat to your safety.

Determining liability

Should you suffer serious injuries after slipping or falling to the ground due to slick or poorly maintained floors and walkways, you may wish to know more about the next steps to take to pursue restitution. However, determining liability can be a complex process. Fortunately, you don't have to go through this alone, and by speaking to someone with experience in such intricate matters, you could find yourself in a much better position to pursue the full amount of compensation you're entitled through a premises liability claim.
